SGM & AGM Wrap UP

The Special General Meeting and the Annual General Meeting of Narooma School of Arts and Soldiers War Memorial Hall Inc was held on Tuesday 11 March 2025.

The Special General Meeting passed the proposed changes to the NSoA’s constitution, amending Clause 47 to change from a Public Fund to a Gift Fund as required by changes to Government legislation. This will ease administration of the fund by the organisation.

The AGM followed with Jenni Bourke presenting her President’s Report which you can read here. The 2025 Management Committee was elected and consists of Jenni Bourke - President, Bob Aston - Vice President, Maree Philip - Treasurer, Laurelle Pacey - Secretary and Public Officer and members Yvonne Adams, Anne Espinoza, Peter Jeffrey, Barbara McConchie and Petti McInnes.

After the election the committee briefed the meeting on the Narooma Arts Centre project. The architectural plans were displayed, discussed and questions answered. On completion of the new building, the Narooma School of Arts will hold and maintain a complex of community assets in the heart of Narooma, including the Cottage/Studio, the Soldier’s War Memorial Hall which is home to the Kinema, and the Narooma Arts Centre.

Council reconstructs retaining wall

Council is currently constructing a new retaining wall behind the Kinema to support the rear corner of its car park. This work is necessary to reduce Council’s encroachment on School of Arts’ land by the previous batter retaining wall and in preparation for the construction of the Narooma Arts Centre.

While this work is underway, a section of Council’s car park will not be available and access from Bowen Street across the School of Arts’ site will be restricted. Work started in the last week of March. Council expects this work to take about six weeks, weather permitting.

NAROOMA GALLERY

It’s the last days for the current incarnation of the Narooma Gallery. Do you have works that you have always wanted to exhibit that are still in your studio? Why not have a quick short sharp exhibition at the Narooma Gallery. The Easter period is free and Narooma is a popular holiday destination. • Narooma Historical Society: Is presenting an exhibition in the Lighthouse Museum Friday 18 April – Sunday 18 May for the National Trust’s Heritage Festival.

  The Festival theme is Unearthed – bringing to light lesser-known histories and stories from our area. The Museum will be open 7am-2pm.

  Narooma Historical Society will meet in the NSoA Studios 2pm Sunday 20 April.

ARTS beyond THE SHIRE

Ngununggula

Have you visited Ngununggula in the Southern Highlands. It opened in 2021 and is going from strength to strength. A new exhibition titled Tender opens 12 April. It explores the word tender and concept  of tenderness through the paintings of seven women.

Next time you are travelling to Sydney, take a detour up to Bowral and visit this exhibition, it closes 15 June. 

National Gallery of Australia until 27 April 2025

The NGA is hosting two major exhibitions celebrating the work of artists Anne Dangar and Ethel Carrick. A fabulous collection of the original ceramic works of Anne Dangar is a must see if you are a ceramics enthusiast. The NGA writes  “Dangar is one of very few Australian artists to form part of the European avant-garde in the twentieth century, and the only one to meaningfully contribute to Cubism in France, her adopted home.”

The works of Ethel Carrick are a part of the iconic post-impressionist period influenced by her many years of travel between Britain, France and Australia.

The Kinema

The Kinema is Narooma’s much loved independent cinema. They have a fantastic program of new releases, art house and independent films, along with live performances and events. Support the Kinema this autumn and take your family and friends to see a movie in our heritage listed hall.
