NSoA MEMBERS EXHIBITION 2O23

The exhibition opened on Wednesday 6 December and continues until Thursday 4 Jan 2024. The gallery will be closed for Christmas from Sat 23 - Tue 26 December and then again from 1pm on New Years Eve and all day Monday 1 Jan 2024, reopening again on Tuesday 2 January.

A big thank you to the 24 members that contributed and participated in the exhibition. The exhibition includes a diverse range of mediums, styles and concepts and demonstrates the level of activity that is happening here in Narooma and our region. We are delighted that works have been selling and as they leave the gallery we brought out other works to replace them.

We had an opening combined with our Christmas Party on Sat 16 December which was a lovely gathering of friends and members. Thanks to all who contributed food and enjoyed the afternoon with some of the Management Committee in attendance. Come in and see work by your fellow members before the exhibition ends on Thursday 4 Jan 2024.

UPDATE ON THE NAROOMA ARTS CENTRE

We are making great progress even though it has been going on for a while. Here is a condensed summary:

  • 2021: We received the grant. Sign off on the grant experienced long delays, frustratingly putting us behind schedule.

  • 2022: The architects concept went out to tender. Due to the extraordinary blow outs in the building and construction industry since Covid, the costing came back well over our budget.

  • 2023: We were invited to go back to the funding body to request further funding on the proviso that the we rescope the design to a smaller building or redesign. Rescoping, to the degree required, put the design integrity of the building at risk and so we opted for a redesign. We put together a new brief, put out a call for EOI’s, and TAKT Architects of Congo were the successful architects. At the end of 2023 we are finalising the design response in preparation for our initial Quantity Surveyor costing and submitting the new plans to council.

We are committed to a strict time line to see this building get out of the ground.

JOIN THE NAROOMA SCHOOL OF ART COMMITTEES

We are looking for you. Your contribution will help further the mission of the organisation:

To embrace the rich diversity of arts practice in the region and foster a deeper appreciation of creativity and arts learning in our community.

There are always good reasons not to volunteer: you are already too busy (aren’t we all), you have kid’s school and sports activities to consider (many people do), or you’re not artistic or creative (guess what you don’t need to be).

Undertaking board or committee service is a way to enrich your skills and contribute to your communities well being. As part of a volunteer arts board, you will learn, develop or enhance skills in decision making, and if you take the time to know the content and listen to your fellow board members you will positively contribute to outcomes that preserve the artistic and financial integrity of the organisation. Your participation will build your expertise in governance which you can then use in your professional life.

In the bigger picture your efforts will support the organisation to provide a centre for the cultural life of Narooma. Being an active member will help us towards our goal to be a centre, a hub, that is a safe and inclusive space for the participation in, and consumption of the arts. Alongside our favourite cinema in NSW, the Kinema, you can help us drive the new centre to be inclusive, diverse, ethically responsible and a destination of cultural integrity for locals and tourists alike.

Read about our committees here.

Contact us here, if you are interested in being on a committee.
