Materials List for Colour Studies at the Narooma School of Arts

Paint

I will be using acrylic paint to demonstrate and would prefer we all use acrylics. If you would like to use something different please get in touch and let us know.

Our basic palette will be warm and cool primary colours, earth tones and black and white. If you’re not familiar with the names of colours and you can go to an art supply shop, ask for a warm and cool of each primary colour. The paints you use don’t have to be expensive, but be mindful that generally the cheaper the paint the lower the quality and intensity of the pigment.

 Lemon yellow

Cadmium yellow

Alizarin crimson

Cadmium red

Phthalo blue

Ultramarine blue

Burnt umber

Burnt sienna

Mars black

Titanium white

If you already own more colours you’re welcome to bring along whatever else you use. I also like using a good cobalt blue and lamp black. You might also like to bring a medium such as flow retarder. It’s generally a good idea to use an acryic medium with acrylic paint as it helps with the spread of paint.

Brushes

Synthetic and / or bristle brushes

Flat or Filbert (brights are also okay but flats and filberts are necessary). Please include some smaller size 2 brushes as well as larger sizes. Brushes should be reasonably stiff (not the super soft cheap brushes). Please make sure your brushes are reasonably stiff. The very soft brushes seem nice but are generally better suited for watercolour and very detailed work.

Surfaces

For drawing and notes: A3 (or A4) visual diary (with pages that can be removed).

For painting: Pad of A3 painting paper. This can be canvas paper that has been pre treated for painting with acrylic or oil, or it can be sheets of actual canvas that has been gessoed. If you are using the canvas / gesso option you might like to apply and additional layer of gesso to ensure a good painting surface.
or canvas board or canvas, approx. 30 x 40cm. Please prepare your surface with 1 – 2 coats of good quality gesso.
